In a nutshell: Niru figures out he’s gay and comes out to his best friend, who had a crush on him. When his parents find out, they take Niru to Nigeria to help him get over it. Niru and Meredith grow apart after he returns from Nigeria. This is the story of what happens after. Hold on for this one. You’re going to need some tissues.

#bookaday Speak No Evil by Uzodinma Iweala. #SNRtbs beautifully written coming-of-age story about an upper class first generation Nigerian American boy (how many of those have we read about?) Who struggles with sexuality versus faith. The narrative style was jarring when I transitioned from audio to physical the first time, but I found that it made me slow down and appreciate the prose. The synopsis spoiled part one for me, but part to hit me like a ton of bricks. Though I suppose when [spoiler redacted], it’s never expected. I love how the end tied back to the title (I’m thinking about poetry analyzation techniques, sorry). Fabulously heart breaking read.
