#StickyNoteReview for Required Reading for the Disenfranchised Freshman by Kristin R. Lee

This read was me trying to read things that have been recommended to me. This one, from my friend Morgan, who is awesome.

It’s billed as a great read for fans of Dear White People, and I’d agree with that. Here’s what I thought:

Required Reading is a contemporary novel about racism on elite college campuses. As I was reading I thought a lot about claims of meritocracy, disbelief that someone from the global majority might be qualified to attend an elite institution, and the percent of students who are legacies. Required Reading highlights this issue, as well as how upper administration deals with overt racism on campus (hint: consequences mess with their money). It’s an angry-making activism-centered read that is definitely worth talking about.
