The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta is one that has been on my radar since it came out, but I wasn’t expecting it to be
- a novel in verse, and
- a story that I would blow through so very quickly.
Readers learn about Michael’s sexuality early — he puts it in the context of wanting to play with dolls and the vehement lack of acceptance from the culture of his father’s family. It takes growing up and going away to uni for Michael to find himself. And while I knew where he would find himself before the book started, it was the ride to get there that was so fun.
