The Friday 56: Full Cicada Moon

friday-56I’m back for a minute – I have a bit of writer’s block – so I thought I’d take minute, link up with Freda at Freda’s Voice, and do a Friday 56.

The rules are simple: find a book, turn to page 56 (or 56% on an ereader) and tell us what it says.

Today’s book is Full Cicada Moon by Marilyn Hilton. This book was lent to me by a friend. I’ve been writing and the library doesn’t have an audiobook so I haven’t gotten to it yet, but it was the closest thing I had at hand (that is, the ebook copy from the library that didn’t require me to move).

It’s a novel in verse that’s billed as One Crazy Summer meets Brown Girl Dreaming meets Inside Out and Back Again. Honestly, that’s something I’m here for. Coming of age with the backdrop of the Apollo 11 launch. I’m more curious now than I was a minute ago.
This is from 56% in the digital edition.

Didn’t he say remember the past
but keep moving forward?

I think what I like about this section of a stanza is it’s one of those universally understandable phrases. This is something I could hear someone saying to someone else when a big change is going to happen. But at the same time, I know it’s hard not to get stuck in the past. So I can’t help but wonder what past this character is stuck in and whether or not they’re going to find their way out of their past.

I guess I’ll have to read it to find out.

What are you reading this weekend?
