Books to Get Me Out of a Reading Slump | Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is books that get me out of a reading slump. I’m going to give you my intro video, even though it’s not my whole list. There are some bonus features at the end (Read: I got my wife to be in a video). If you just want the list, scroll down.

I broke down my list into categories, because different kinds of slumps require different kinds of reads.

My first category is the feel-good romance. I have three books in this category that I tend to (or will tend to) go to: (1) The Summer of Jordi Perez, (2) When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon, and (3) The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli. Now Upside is probably first on this list, if I’m being honest. It has to do with the parents. I love Molly’s moms and would love to be friends with them. It might have to do with the fact that Molly’s moms are an interracial couple, and I’m also in an interracial relationship. All three of these could get me out of a slump.

Next, the non-stop adventure. When the action just keeps a-coming and you can’t get away from it. Some favorites are (4) Warcross by Marie Lu, and my current read, the (5) Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series. Magnus Chase actually did pull me out of a bit of a slump. So good for Riordan.

These are always a go to. I don’t mind being in my feelings. (6) Dear Martin by Nic Stone is one that got me and I’m sure will get me again when I have to reread it. But it’s one that will definitely make me want to read more. Then there’s (7) Far From the Tree, which makes me want to read more about adoption, and we’re somewhere at the end of the beginning of that process right now. And finally (8) They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera makes me want to read both other books by him, and other books where you know what’s going to happen, but you read it anyway. There’s something to be said about the ability to know the end at the beginning and still feel some kind of way about what happens.

The last category of books that get me going are road trip books. (9) The Haters by Jesse Andrews is one that got me out of a slump once. I needed books about road trips for a Feature Shelf I was working on and that one got the pages turning again for me. And finally, (10) Looking for Group by Rory Harrison. And that’s all I can say about that.

What books or kinds of books get you out of your reading slumps? Leave me a link so I can check it out.
