Hardcovers: With or Without Dust Jackets?

ebc19-book2bblogger2bhop2b2528final2529I had a minute, so I thought I’d quickly answer the question from Maria @ A Night’s Dream of Books on this week’s Book Blogger Hop. Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer. Wander over there for more answers to this question.

Do you read hardcovers with the dust jacket on or off? Why or why not?

Personally, I read my hardcovers with the dust jacket on. I’m a middle school reading teacher, so most of the time when I’m reading, it’s to model for them what good readers do. I want them to see what I’m reading, to ask me questions about it, which will hopefully result in interest in reading whatever I’ve read.

When I give them my hardcovers, however, I take the dust jacket off. Some of my students, especially those who don’t read very much, are very hard on my books. At least if the book itself is falling apart, I have a nice dust jacket to put back on top of it. Additionally, if the book is destroyed beyond my ability to repair, I use the dust jacket for display on my bulletin board (then, if the student has integrity, they will replace the book. If I’m not, I replace it myself).

Do you read with the dust jackets on or off? Leave it in the comments and I’ll see you there soon. Happy reading, and don’t forget to be awesome.

That’s a great answer. I never take the dust jacket off but I guess I would if I was going to have kids around them or give them to someone.

That’s so cool that you are a teacher and get to share reading with your students. I may or may not have been a little rough when I was a student on books. Thanks for sharing. Have a great week and happy reading.

I think I was a lot kinder to books when I was at school / university. It’s adulthood that turned me into a monster. If it wasn’t for the invention (and my conversion) to kindle, I’d be hunted for crimes against books…

LOL! That’s hilarious. I figure if they’re yours, though, you can do whatever you want to them.

I’m weird when it comes to dust jackets. Sometimes I leave them on, sometimes I take them off.

I tend to leave the dust jackets on to have it be a habit. When I’m reading at work, I want the kids to be intrigued enough by the cover that they’ll ask me about what I’m reading. It generally starts the conversation of what I’d recommend for them to read. Nothing makes me happier than sending them home with a book or two of their own! 🙂

Right? There’s nothing better than giving books to kids.

Agreed! I had one come back and ask me if there was anything like what I sent them home with the day before because he devoured it. I nearly cried tears of joy!

I read with the dust jacket on. I like the idea of using the dust jacket for your classroom bulletin board.
