Do You Read Reviews First?

This week, I decided not to tell a story, and instead talk about something I’ve been thinking about for the last few days: when I read book reviews before I read books themselves.

Description box:
Under what circumstances do you read the reviews before you read the book? Here’s what I’m reading this week. What are you reading this week?

I used to always read reviews before I read a book because I wanted to know what the general consensus was and to see if a book would be worth my time reading it. This year, I haven’t read reviews before reading a book and I’ve really enjoyed going into books not knowing what others think. I usually see things on twitter about books that might be and are problematic.

I’m glad that’s working out well for you.

I have to admit that I always read reviews before and sometimes during. I especially get bogged down in reading them if it’s a book that everyone seems to enjoy but me. There some need to find out why and also to find that one reviewer that didn’t like it. I usually take reviews with a grain of salt.

I totally get that. I think that’s what happened to me this week.

I used to read reviews first, but now I just try to get a book that looks interesting to me and start reading at least the first 100 pages without adding it on Goodreads so I can form my own opinion before seeing what other people thought. I found that if I started reading a book and added it immediately, seeing that it maybe got less than a 3 rating, it would affect my opinion on it.

I like your 100 page before adding rule. I think I might steal that. I definitely checked on the book that inspired this post before I got to that point. Thanks!
