YA Books for My Future Nerdling

I had a minute, so I thought I’d jump in on today’s Top Ten Tuesday. Today’s topic, from the lovely readers over at The Broke and the Bookish is Top Ten Books I Want My Future Children to Read.

As I teach middle school, I went the MG/YA route with this list. Besides, Trace likes younger kids, so she can raise our hypothetical nerdling until they become a teenager, and then I’ll take over.

Here’s my list (it’s totally not the whole list. And I’m sure by the time we have a kid and they’re old enough to read YA, they’ll complain that all these books are old).

I’m embarrassed that I have read like ZERO of the books you’ve chosen! Need to get on that. Great list! 🙂

Don’t be embarrassed. To be fair, I teach middle school, so my reading selections are always rather broad.

I really want to read All American Boys. Flygirl is also one I’ve heard so many wonderful things about. I worry that I might not take to it as historical fiction isn’t my usual genre.

It’s not my usual genre either. I picked it because when my wife and I have a kid, they will be biracial. Because Flygirl is about a light-skinned black girl, I thought it might be something our kid could see themselves in.

I haven’t read a lot of these so I’ll have to check them out – I think A Monster Calls is a great choice to be honest because of what the little boy is going through and how others relate to his experience.

Right? It was one of those super emotional books I absolutely loved.

Ok, I’m embarrased to say I STILL have not read THUG or Dear Martin. Must get on that ASAP!

Oh I haven’t read many of these (I’m almost embarrassed to say, I have to admit) but I am thrilled to see The Hate U Give and A Monster Calls on your list because those are two favourite of mine (and definitely books I will recommend to the younger generation of readers as well).
Great picks for this week. 😀

Dear Martin is one I want I want to read. I’ve read Their Eyes a bunch of times and that is definitely a good one to put on the list.

Be prepared to do self care after reading Dear Martin. I had to read something fluffy after because it was so emotional.

Great list! I am literally ASHAMED that I haven’t read The Hate U Give yet. I pre-ordered it, for goodness’ sake, but I just haven’t worked up the spine yet because I know it’s going to break my heart into pieces. Dear Martin absolutely shattered me, so I can only imagine THUG will, too, but it is on my “MUST READ before 2017 ends!” list, so I’ll be picking it up very very soon.

I totally understand that being a reason for putting off The Hate You Give. I actually put it off for a time, too, before I read it. Same with Dear Martin. All I can say is make sure you take care of yourself after THUG breaks your heart. Happy reading!

Thank you. ❤ I feel like when I tell people I haven't read it yet, they usually scold me (playfully), so it's actually kind of comforting to hear that you put it off for a little while for the same reason. I will be sure to have tissues and comfort snacks on stand-by, lol!

Your list is amazing. I loved A Monster Calls, THUG, and Dear Martin when I read them, and I wish I had thought to add Their Eyes Were Watching God. I remember reading that in high school and just being blown away by it.
