Top Ten Books I Read with My Original Book Buddy

My cousin and I started reading together when he was ten or so, and I was in the early years of my teaching career. There’s 15 years between the two of us. I remember one time my aunt called me — she and my cousins were on their way home from a baseball game — and asked for something for Sam to read because he was driving her crazy. That was well after we’d started reading together, but it’s probably the most vivid memory I have of our reading relationship.

When he got to the upper high school grades, we stopped reading together. Life just got in the way. After my grandfather’s 90th birthday party this summer, we reconnected and shared Scythe by Neal Shusterman (Shusterman is a shared love of ours) as well as a few other novels. But here’s what we read together when he was a kid.

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. What’s on your list this week?

He’s our number one go to. When Sam called last semester and said he wanted something to read, Scythe was my first pick.

I’ve been wanting to read the Legend series for such a long time now! I never had a book buddy when I was younger since I spent a lot of time alone, but it sounds like such a good idea 🙂

I spent a lot of time alone, too. I live in New Mexico and Sam grew up in Chicago. We talked on the phone.

Yeah. And Sam is one of my favorite people. It was kind of neat to have him come home from his first year of college and tell me what a difference it made to him that we read together. He said it made his reading for college so much easier.

Oh I love that you did the tag in video form, how fun!
I absolutely love the Legend series!
Percy Jackson is a great series to read with a buddy.
My younger brother got to read it with his class, and I was so jealous. We didn’t get to read any fun books as a class when I was in school lol.
Great list, and I hope you have a great rest of your week!

What was great about reading Percy Jackson with him was that he was the one who turned me onto it. Happy reading!

I think it’s great you and your cousin read together when he was a kid, and even better you manage to reconnect and read together again after your grandfather’s birthday. It’s nice to have that kind of connection with someone, one of my best friends is someone I connected with because of our love to read. 🙂
Also great picks for this week. I love the Legend series, although I only read it very recently. It’s the same with the Percy Jackson series, I only read the books recently but I ended up loving them so much! 😀

Thanks! And thanks for stopping by. Percy Jackson was definitely what got us started, and I’m thankful for that all the time.

Holy crap, you’re adorable! I loved this video. I STILL need to read the Legend series. My stepson (who is now 15) read Percy Jackson when he was a preteen and was totally obsessed. Sounds like you and your cousin found some fantastic pick!

Thanks! And yeah, we did. I’m glad we had that opportunity. I think it’s made as much a difference in my reading life as it did his.

That’s the lovely thing about the bookternet. I’ve made a number of friends through booktube, and one of them and I read together.

I’ve wanted to read the Legend series for a while now, most especially because I’ve read lots of positive things about Marie Lu. In fact, I did pick up a paperback copy of it during a B&N trip, so at some point, maybe, I’ll actually read it. 🙂

Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland!

I’m totally stoked for her new book, Warcross. Come to think of it, I need to tell my cousin about it. I don’t think he knows.
