One of my first hour students, we’ll call him Ruben, is reading The Great Cow Race, the second book in Jeff Smith’s Bone series. Today at the end of class he comes up to me and asks if the writer (Smith) was channeling other stories because a few of the characters reminded him of characters he’d seen in other places. To be more specific, he said the way the character of Thomas is drawn looks suspiciously like Tom Sawyer’s description. Jasmine, also, has a familiar countenance. Though he didn’t extrapolate, I think he wanted me to make the same connection he did: to Aladdin. Do you think Smith did this on purpose?
I love that Ruben is making connections not just with the story itself, but with its images. I’m excited to continue talking with him about his reading.
