Favorite names are so hard to choose, so I’m just going to tell you about two today instead of ten.

Let me preface this by saying that I am a musician. And as a musician, many of my instruments have names (if you’ve been in band or orchestra, you’re probably familiar with this concept). They are important and while they may not have feelings, they do have temperament, and it’s important to treat them nicely.

So my first instrument named after a character from a book is Taeko from Malinda Lo’s Huntress. Taeko was not what I wanted to call my bass. I wanted to name it Taisin, from the same book, representing a love that I’d lost and longed for. But my bass had other ideas. So I present to you, Taeko.

Karou is the name of a character from Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, a fantasy story that I absolutely love. In the language of her people, Karou means hope. I bought her as my birthday present to myself this year, I suppose hoping to have a great year.  And it has been so far. I mean, I played a gig at an international online conference, I released an album, and I managed to find a way out of my creativity slump. A month into a new year and I’m doing pretty well.
