Breath by Jackie Morse Kessler
Paperback, 320 pages
Breath is the last book in the Riders of the Apocalypse series, following Hunger, Rage, and Loss. This installment follows the Pale Rider, Death, on his spiral into hopelessness, and it follows the life of a teenage boy who Death owes something to, Xander, who is carrying around a huge secret. The more depressed Death becomes, the more the other riders become concerned about the fate of the world they hold in balance.
As far as my favorite in the series, it’s probably a toss up between this one and Rage. I love how we get to know Death in this installment — how he became who he is. I would love to see stories about the world he comes from — from the other side of that door in the sky.
I’m not going to analyze this story; I let the read for enjoyment part of my brain take over. But I will say that after reading this book, I must write at least two songs. I’ll post them here when I’m done.
