Notes from an Accidental Band Geek by Erin Dionne

As someone who participated in both marching band and rigorous concert bands in high school and college, I really identified with this one. So much nostalgia…
Elise is bound and determined to get into a elite music camp as a freshman, except that in order to get in, she has to try playing with a different ensemble. Namely, marching band. The adjustment to marching band it difficult for Elise, particularly because since she has to change from traditional french horn to mellophone, a bell-front instrument that fingers like a trumpet.
I liked that while the portrayal of marching band was different from my personal experience as a Marching Panther, and then a member of the All-American Marching Band of Purdue (these were show bands, not competition bands), the experiences ring true of those marching friends I’ve had who have come out of competition bands.
