For his 12th birthday, the narrator receives his late grandfather’s lawnmower from his grandmother. A series of (slightly unrealistic) situations ensues beginning with being recruited to cut all the lawns in his neighborhood because the previous landscaper ran off with the wife of one of his customers and ending with owning a prizefighter… and all he was trying to do was find a way to pay for the inner tube for his bicycle.
For a nice little romp where a 12 year old learns capitalism (or realistically, you want to read a short book) check out Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen.
