Sweet, Herafter, is the third in the Heaven series, which begins with Heaven and continues with First Part, Last. In Sweet, Hereafter, Shoogy is trying to figure out where she belongs. She’s left home, and is living in a cabin in the woods with a friend, who is a war veteran. This short, poignant novel tackles coming of age, post-traumatic stress, and friendship. Will Shoogy figure out where she belongs? How does Curtis deal with having been to war and the potential of returning? Readers must pay attention to the language Johnson uses to paint the scene in the novel, and to the shifts in time (to avoid becoming confused).
