The First Part Last by Angela Johnson
Paperback, 144 pages
The First Part Last follows a teenage father, Bobby, who must care for his infant daughter. Unlike many novels dealing with teenage pregnancy, where the pregnancy and raising of the child is dealt with from the mother’s point of view, readers are only in Bobby’s head, seeing events unfold from his point of view.
First Part Last is written in alternating “Then” and “Now” chapters, slowly revealing what happened to the mother of his child. He is sixteen, discovering that he loves his daughter, and struggling with the role change when he’s not done being a child himself.
The story is beautifully told in short enough chapters that it might make an excellent read-aloud.
